The Body As A Canvas: Body Art

The human body is the tool through which somebody experiences life and his surroundings as well as interacts and communicates with others. To some people, however, the body is another piece of canvas through which they could express themselves, their beliefs and their traditions.

Drawing a Picture, Telling a Message

Just as paintings hanging on walls make a room more beautiful, body art can enhance a person?s good physical attributes. Some ladies have a sunflower tattooed on their backs so that they can wear backless dresses that will reveal their flawless skin adorned by the tattooed flower. In this sense, body art is worn the way diamond necklaces are ? it is meant to adorn and enhance the wearer?s beauty. However, there are other much more complex reasons for the proliferation and practice of body art. These reasons can be cultural, political, or spiritual.

Body art is extremely common in jails. Tattooing and branding are some of the most common rites of passage for inmates who wish to be part of certain groups. Body art can also be used to declare personal beliefs and political stand. In this case, body art can be compared to graffiti on the wall; it declares what the person wearing the art believes. People in ethnic groups also used tattooing extensively as a form of ornamentation. In some cases, tattoos were used to mark how many people a warrior has killed in battle.

Body Art Types

Widely known types of body art are body painting, tattoos, shaping, scarification, branding and body piercing. Body painting is usually done by painting on the body, usually covering the whole body completely with water-soluble makeup or paints. Body painting is very similar to painting on canvas, however, it can be more difficult to accomplish as the body has contours that makes painting pictures and scenes on the body more complicated.

Tattoos, probably known by all, are permanent decorations on the body applied through the use of an electrically ran needle. Body tattoos usually cover a relatively small portion of the body. Favorite places for body tattoos are the chest, the upper arms, and the back of the shoulders. Body tattoos are relatively permanent, too, as the picture or the letters are etched onto the skin.

Body piercing is accomplished through the use of materials such as beads and precious stones and metals. Ear piercing is probably the most practiced by women and some men for accessorizing. Today, piercing is performed on almost all parts of the body such as the nose, the lips, the tongue, the eyebrows, the bellybutton, the nipples, and others. Shaping, on the other hand, is done to permanently shape the body according to a person?s preference. Methods of this type of body art are foot binding ? common among Chinese women.

Scarifications are more unconventional methods of body art. There are religious groups that deliberately scar their body (usually with pointed objects like knives) using a prescribed pattern. Somewhat similar to scarification, branding is another type of body art that involves a whole lot of pain. This was originally done to farm animals (cows and horses) and originally used for identification purposes. This is accomplished through placing an extremely hot piece of metal with a certain design on the body until it burns the skin and leaves a mark that may last forever.

Whatever form of body art is practiced, it is certain to elicit varying reactions. Body art can be beautiful, captivating, or disturbing depending on the beholder?s point of view and set of values.

Tattoos Art Or Destruction?

Have you been considering or wanting to get a tattoo put somewhere on your body? It seems like tattoos are becoming the latest craze within the fashion world today and even housewife's are getting them now a days. Does this mean you should get one or even allow your child to get one? Remember trends fade and change while a tattoo is permanent; therefore there are many things to consider before getting a tattoo.

For the longest time the only people who could be seen with tattoos were sailors and people who had been in prison. Sailors were getting different tattoos from all over the world while convicts were getting tattoos made in prison even though these were illegal.
This was how the norm was for the longest time until tattoos started becoming popular among gang members to tell everybody which gang they belong to.

Because of how popular the gang and rap culture has become among today's youth we also see an increase in tattoos among this generation. Whether this is right or wrong is up to each individual family to decide before going out to get a tattoo but remember just as times and fashions change so do you. In a couple of years from now you might end up being very sorry for that tattoo on your shoulder and having it removed can be both costly and painful.

If you do decide to get a tattoo you should be happy to know that it is much less dangerous today than what it used to be when they used the same needles over and over again. Regardless you should make sure you are getting a new or at least a sterilized needle before you let the artist work on you. Although it is safer to get a tattoo today it is always a risk in what ever you do.

Another thing to remember before getting a tattoo is that your body ages with time and a tattoo wont look anything like it was supposed to when your skin gets older. Instead of looking like that beautiful flower it was it will look like you just smeared ink all over your arm, not a very pretty sight. The more tattoos you have, the more ink spots you will end up with all over your body as time goes by.

These are all things you need to consider before you go and get a tattoo and unless you are one hundred percent certain that a tattoo is for you, you might want to reconsider. Fortunately there are other avenues you can take instead of getting a permanent tattoo put on. There are temporary tattoos you can get and they are just as awesome as the regular ones the only difference is that you are not stuck with the tattoo for the rest of your life.

A temporary tattoo can last for anywhere from a couple of days to several months and may be an alternative for you who are not certain that a permanent tattoo is the right thing for you. Wanting a tattoo might just be a fashion stage you are going thru and with a permanent tattoo you will be in trouble when this stage in your life passes. Before doing anything impulsive make sure what kind of tattoo you would want, a permanent tattoo or a temporary one.

Flower Tattoo Designs from the Popular Hawaiian Islands

While being in Honolulu Hawaii for Christmas vacation I noticed the many different tattoo designs that are prevalent here. Any kind of flower or tribal tattoo can be found on most natives to Hawaii. What is in a tattoo design? Some of the most popular tattoos are the Hibiscus flower, usually a red or yellow flower with a few pedals surrounding the middle seed. This flower is a popular design and coexists with the rose tattoo. If you are looking for a flower tattoo you probably cannot go wrong with a Hibiscus flower, second to the rose. If you don't know what one looks like do a little image search on a popular search engine and you are bound to have many results.

After being in Hawaii for 10 days it has opened my eyes up to the massive amount of tattoo designs there are in the world. I have never seen so many different kinds of tattoos, it almost seems like everyone on the island had a tattoo of some sort. My friend stayed an extra 2 weeks and it so happens that he just got an arm band tattoo. Of course he did not get a flower but went with the tribal design. Flower tattoos are popular with the natives of the island along with women. You would not see too many guys with flower tattoos unless if it was a fashion statement. Usually a guy will get a tribal design of some sort, almost mimicking a razor design or barbed wire fence.

Are you looking for a tattoo design but don't know where to start? We are researching the many different tattoos that are both popular and uncommon. The rose tattoo is the most popular design but also the Hibiscus Hawaiian flower is becoming a popular pick from tropical areas. Picking the right design is the most important part of the tattoo process otherwise you will spend more money getting a rose tattoo design you do not like removed by lasers.

The Rose Tattoo Designs So Many Meanings In One Simple Flower

The Rose Tattoo Designs - So Many Meanings In One Simple FlowerSubmitted By: Madonna Jeffries

Without doubt the rose is the most adored breed of flower throughout the world. One would have to guess that the popularity of the rose has been linked to the romantic connotations that roses have between lovers. Every woman would appreciate a bunch of roses or even a single rose from their lover as a token of their love and affection. The red rose in particular undoubtedly the most popular color and relates strongly to romance as well as sexual relationships. To other people the rose may have other symbolic meanings.

For example it is claimed in folklore that both Aphrodite who was the Greek Goddess of Love, and Venus who was Aphrodite?s Roman equivalent, revered the red rose. The red rose has religious connections and is symbolic of the Virgin Mary. The people who claim to have witnessed a vision of Mary say that her appearance is always accompanied by the smell of roses.

If you are considering having a rose tattoo design, but are reluctant to because of the romantic implications, don?t worry - I have seen many masculine guys wearing a rose tattoo, often as a reminder of departed loved ones. Some creative guys have even incorporated the rose into a multi-image tattoo such as having a snake curled around a dagger embedded in a rosebush.

English Roses

Here is a bit of history for you! Do you know why a beautiful English woman is typically referred to as ?An English Rose?? Well it is related to some of Shakespeare?s writings where he refers to the red rose and compares his love (lady) with a red rose in the line, ?O my love is like a red, red rose?.

As well as having a romantic connotation the rose is also reflective of more aggressive situations, for example, the image of roses are the family symbols of two of England?s famous and feuding families - the Lancasters (whose Family emblem is the red rose) and the Yorks (whose coat of arms is made up of white rose).

In addition to this one of Britain?s dominant political parties, the Labor Party, is symbolized by red roses.

Guns ?N? Roses

Another more masculine use of the rose tattoo design involves the 1980?s rock band ?Guns ?n? Roses?, The members of the Band were well known for their hard rocking music and lifestyle yet they all wore tattoos incorporating the image of the rose albeit with tattoos of guns. As a result many fans both male and female emulated the band members by getting tattoos with images of guns and roses.

Rose Tattoo Designs ? Choose Your Colors Wisely

The color of a rose has significance and meaning, so before you commit to a particular design you should choose the color that best represents the symbolism of your tattoo.

* A red rose embodies the conventional color choice and exemplifies beauty, love, bravery, passion and romanticism

* A red rose bud constitutes a symbol of pureness and loveliness

* A dark red rose stands for unconscious beauty

* A gold rose represents accomplishment

* A pink rose bespeaks friendship, appreciation, grace, happiness and gentleness

* A light pink rose symbolizes understanding and sweetness

* A white rose conveys sinlessness, innocence, silence, privacy, reverence, humbleness, youthfulness and charm

* A yellow rose personifies joyfulness, happiness, jealousy or an apology

* A lavender rose intends fascination

* A coral rose symbolizes desire

* A blue rose represents impossibilities

* A black rose traditionally represents sorrow and death

For those considering having a rose style tattoo, but are concerned that the design does not reflect their true way of life or image, just consider some of the historical facts regarding the rose and feel comfortable with having a tattoo incorporating a rose in the design.

TattoosPopular Tattoo Designs for Girls

Girls are always asking me what tattoos they should get or what I think are the hottest tattoos for girls. Unfortunately there is no clear cut answer simply because there are as many different types of tattoos are there are girls. What one person might find sexy another might consider unattractive or very unfeminine.

Certain styles of tattoos might not suit the image you want to project. For example certain work environments may not accept highly visible tattoos even though tattoos are becoming more and more accepted. It may be wise to hold off getting that sacred heart tattoo emblazoned across your chest if your boss is going to flip out if (s)he sees it!

So in saying that what I hope to do in this short article is offer my insight and experience within the tattoo industry for the past 9 or 10 years and point out the current tattoo trends and what the most popular styles of tattoos are for girls. At the end of the day you want a tattoo that has lasting appeal and not a tattoo that was done on a whim. If I give you some good ideas for your next tattoo all the better...

Trends come and go. What was cool ten years ago is no longer cool. In the nineties certain types of tattoos such as cartoon characters like Betty Boop, barbed wire armbands and dolphins were in. Looking at them now they appear very cheesy and basic.

Tattoo art has come such a long way in the past few years even. Certain styles of tattoos have become perennial and have risen to a point where they are getting the respect and acknowledged they deserve for their intricacy and artistry.

Styles as diverse as Japanese tattoos, Indian/Hindu tattoos, Anime, Traditional American and Floral designs are raising the bar higher and higher and becoming increasingly popular.

Alongside that is the fact that people are beginning to see their skin as a human canvas and not just settling for random tattoos placed haphazardly on a part of the body that is hidden. Nowadays more and more girls are getting larger tattoos and more of them.

This may explain the popularity of Japanese tattoos. In traditional Japanese tattoos each character has a meaning and interacts with the other tattoo designs as part of the whole.

The same is true for Traditional American tattoos. Previously what were once done as individual tattoos from disparate elements of American culture are now being woven into an organic and is more like a story unfolding.

Top Five Most Popular Tattoos for Girls

Irezumi - Traditional Japanese tattoos - More and more girls are asking for large tattoo designs such as koi fish, dragons on their hips, back and arms.

Traditional American tattoos - Old school 'Sailor Jerry' tattoos and images such as classic American cars, pin-ups, swallows and nautical stars are becoming more popular on girls chests, abdomen, back and legs.

Floral tattoos - So many girls are getting flower tattoos as full sleeve tattoos or covering their entire back or legs with floral designs. Flower tattoo designs such as lotus flowers, peonies, orchids, chrysanthemums and flowering vines are the most popular.

Anime - Japanese animation has become massive and doesn't show any sign of disappearing any time soon. As a result Anime tattoos have become popular in the past five years or so. The only risk with Anime tattoo is that unlike other styles will probably age much quicker even though it looks great now.

Indian / Hindu tattoo designs - Like ancient Indian texts and spirituality being rediscovered by people in the West since the 1960's it has been reflected in the demand for Indian tattoo designs. They say everything old become new again.

Finally the most important decision is not to get a tattoo on a whim or choose a tattoo that you think is cute or trendy. Give it a lot of thought. Good art should last. Think of Mona Lisa's smile...
